GET YOUR 'PARTY' ON AT DAZZLES

Dazzles  (Photos: Gerry)
Okay, you're on the ship. After you hit the Lido Deck buffet, and settle into your stateroom, you'll plan your evenings around the shows, restaurants and the casino. But don't forget those places in the ship where you can party into the wee hours -- the dance clubs. When it comes to clubs that dazzle, you should plan a visit to Dazzles, aboard Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships.

Whether it's a live band or DJ, you'll be dancing the night away to the sounds of Michael Jackson, ABBA, Madonna, with some country-western to boot. Dazzles is two stories of sound and lights. And when you aren't dancing, you can find a dark corner and enjoy cocktails for two. Best of all, there's no cover charge and you won't need to hail a taxi to get back to your room. -- Gerry

Are you ready to party?

TAKE AN INTIMATE CRUISE TO THE CARIBBEAN

Pacific Princess (Credit: Princess)
For passengers who want to experience cruising on a slightly smaller scale, one option is the 680-passenger ship, Pacific Princess. This week Princess Cruises announced a 10-day sailing in the Caribbean prior to Pacific Princess going into drydock. According to their release:

"This 10-day sailing features the line’s only calls at the boutique ports of Tortola and St. Barthelemy in 2013. Sailing from January 17-27, this Eastern Caribbean voyage also offers full-day calls in Antigua, St. Lucia and St. Kitts, which features a late evening departure for more time on the island.

"Among the in-port opportunities for passengers on this sailing are tours to Virgin Gorda from Tortola to see the famous geologic formation 'The Baths,' as well as the chance to visit UNESCO World Heritage sites of Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park on St. Kitts and the dramatic Pitons in St. Lucia."

“Because Pacific Princess travels the globe, we rarely have the opportunity to offer a Caribbean cruise on this popular small ship,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “But because we’re rescheduling the ship’s drydock, we now have a wonderful chance to offer this unique one-time itinerary option before she takes off on her yearly world cruise.”

CELEBRITY INFINITY ALASKA EXCURSION

The Mendenhall Glacier, seen from the air (Photo: Bob Nesoff)
By Bob & Sandy Nesoff
Special to Cruising Squared

Over the years we’ve flown in virtually every type of aircraft you can imagine from antique open cockpit bi-planes of the sort Snoopy and his Red Baron flew in, over the Poconos to single engine puddle jumpers in Haiti and the luxury of Air France and Virgin Atlantic jumbo jets. We still feel a bit of excitement as we board any plane, knowing that when we land there’s going to be an adventure ahead of us.

Coming down the gangway of Celebrity’s luxurious ship, the Infinity, in Juneau, Alaska brought with it a bit of extra tingle. Spread out at the foot of the gangway were dozens of tour operators pitching their wares and trying to snag tourists for scores of trips around the Alaskan countryside.

NEWEST PRINCESS SHIP IS 'REGAL'

The keel-laying ceremony for
the Regal Princess (Credit: Princess)
Princess Cruises has started construction on what will be the sister ship to Royal Princess. The new ship, which will make its debut in the Spring of 2014, will be named Regal Princess. The official keel laying ceremony was at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

For those not in the nautical know, the keel is the "bottom-most part of the ship." According to their press release: "Following a traditional blessing by a priest, the ship’s keel – which weighs approximately 500 tons – was moved into position by a huge crane onto the keel blocks. The computer-guided maneuver took only minutes, belying the more than 2 million man hours that will ultimately go into building the vessel. The 3,600-passenger, 141,000-ton ship will remain in the building dock until its float-out next summer."

Regal Princess will offer many of the same special features as Royal Princess, which debuts in June 2013. More information and video previews of Royal Princess are available at www.princess.com/royalprincess.

LABADEE: ROYAL CARIBBEAN'S PRIVATE RETREAT

It's something most of us can only fantasize about: Our own private island.

While it may be a fantasy, cruise passengers can experience at least some of what that would be like on the private ports of call owned by the cruise lines. Take, for example, Royal Caribbean's private stop in Haiti, Labadee, which they describe as:

"On the north coast of Hispaniola, surrounded by beautiful mountain slopes and exotic foliage, sits Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private paradise. This exclusive destination offers pristine beaches, breathtaking scenery and spectacular water activities. We even have an amazing new Aqua Park for kids. Regardless of where you go, you'll find yourself embraced by the beautiful landscape."

If you still can't visualize it, here's a video that will help. -- Gerry

VINTAGE CUNARD AND DACHE

There is so much to adore about Cunard. It is timeless and classic in many ways.

Take this sailor hat from the 1930's. Still stylish and would look just as good today, wouldn't you agree?

If only we wore hats like they did back in the day.

Wearing a little vintage chapeau created by Lilly Dache while strolling the decks of Cunard, or any cruise ship, would be divine.

Oh, I say let's start a trend and bring the glamor back, with hats! --Pam

FLAVORED VODKA AND STORMY WEATHER

While Issac was lashing Florida and drenching us over the weekend (and causing several cruise ships to be re-routed), Pam and I opted to break out the hurricane kit and search for that most important of necessities for any approaching storm: Vodka. We've found a martini and a board game will get you through just about any weather situation.

Always up for something new, we took a friend's advice and tried one of the new flavored vodkas that are so much in vogue these days. In this case, the flavor is Whipped Cream, made by Pinnacle, from France. While I can't know for sure, Pinnacle has to one of the brands offering the most variety of flavors. Would you believe 30! The list includes: Atomic Hots, Berry, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cake, Cherry, Cherry Lemonade, Cherry Whipped, Chocolate Whipped, Citrus, Coconut, Cookie Dough, Cotton Candy, Cucumber Watermelon, Grape, Gummy, Kiwi-Strawberry, Le Double Espresso, Mango, Marshmallow, Orange, Orange Whipped, Peach, Pineapple, Pomegranate, Raspberry, Tropical Punch, Vanilla, Whipped Cream, and Whipped Key Lime.

Our drink of choice was the French martini, a delicious combination of vodka, pineapple juice and Chambord liquor. The Whipped flavor definitely made it sweeter, but in a very nice way.   Cruising Squared rates it two thumbs up! -- Gerry

FRIDAY FLASHBACK

Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek
(Photo: Gerry)
Back in October, 2011, the Allure of the Seas played host to the movie premiere of the DreamWorks animated movie, "Puss in Boots, 3D." Among the stars who attended the first red carpet at sea were Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. They were just as charming in person as the characters they voiced in the film. -- Gerry

NORWEGIAN OFFERING 'SIGNATURE TRIO'

Credit: Norwegian
You know when you book your cruise you're going to want to try the specialty dining restaurants aboard the ship -- the ones that have a surcharge for a more upscale dining experience. Brand new from Norwegian is their "Signature Trio" package that bundles three specialty restaurants into one price. Guests can try the steakhouse, the French bistro and the Italian restaurant on any Norwegian ship for $47 per person, pre-purchased.

Norwegian says "guests with a current cruise reservation can either pre-purchase the package by logging into their “myncl” account on www.ncl.com or by contacting Norwegian reservations at 888-NCL-CRUISE. The offer is not available for purchase on board." -- Gerry

CELEBRITY DINING BEHIND-THE-SCENES

Having taken the behind-the-scenes kitchen tour on several occasions, it's simply amazing to think about everything that goes into feeding thousands of people on a 24/7 basis. From sourcing and stocking to working out the menus to the time a dish arrives at your table, it's overwhelming. Here's a video from Celebrity that gives you a "taste" of what it's like. Bon appetit! -- Gerry

QM2 TO FEATURE GARBO AUCTION, LECTURE

No one loves classic Hollywood movies more than Pam. And who is more classic than film legend Greta Garbo? Movie fans will have a rare chance to view and buy Garbo memorabilia and learn about her life on the Queen Mary 2's Transatlantic crossing set for Nov. 20, 2012.

Julien’s Auctions of Beverly Hills will feature "several of her most photographed belongings, including her iconic cashmere turtleneck and vintage umbrella, used to shield herself from paparazzi. Relics from Garbo's world travels, including her vintage Louis Vuitton suitcase, travel watch and a luggage tag bearing her travel alias, will also be on display" as well.

Additionally, Garbo’s great nephew, Derek Reisfield, will headline Cunard's on board enrichment program, Cunard Insights, "where he will provide a personal account of her life and iconic Hollywood career." Reisfield "will recall personal stories from the actress’ life, learned during his weekly, childhood gatherings with her. Topics will also include career highlights, Garbo’s personal relationships with dignitaries and celebrities such as President John F. Kennedy, Sir Winston Churchill and William Randolph Hearst, and will highlight her lesser-known historical contributions to American and British military intelligence during World War II."

Remembering her classic "I want to be alone" scene from "Grand Hotel":

CELEBRITY MILLENNIUM'S OLYMPIC, TIME TRAVEL

Even if you aren't a history major, like two of these diners, the Olympic restaurant aboard Celebrity's Millennium gives you a profound appreciation for sailing with nautical history.

Millennium contains original wooden panels used in the RMS Olympic (sister ship to the ill-fated RMS Titanic and HMHS Britannic). Removed and preserved when Olympic was sold for scrap in 1936, they remain beautiful and timeless.

Dining amongst history is simply the icing on the gourmet cake. The menu offerings,  presentation and service are flawless.

If aboard this lovely vessel, reserve a table and let your mind travel back in time. You won't regret it. -- Pam

'FLOATING RAMP' GETS FIRST TEST

When a cruise ship can't physically dock at a port, passengers have to disembark by tenders -- basically passenger ferry boats from the ship to shore and back. Now there's another way: the SeaWalk. The SeaWalk, built by a company in Norway, is a motorized, flexible, floating walkway that extends from the shore to the cruise ship. The manufacturer says it can move 4,000 passengers in an hour. Read more here, or view the company video. Pretty neat idea! -- Gerry

JOIN BARBIE AND FRIENDS ON A PARTY CRUISE

Happy Monday, fellow cruisers! Today the topic is -- are you ready? --  Barbie dolls. So, you may wonder, what do Barbie dolls have to do with cruising? Don't tell me you've never heard of Mattel's "Barbie Party Cruise." For Pam, who happens to be a collector of all things Barbie, it's the most fun you can have without actually being on a ship. It's described as "Barbie Party Cruise and play on this luxurious getaway! The water slide folds open and make a splash in the Poolcuzzi. Fold the slide over, and a disco ball comes out, plus music and lights for a dance party. Set up the rotating buffet with aquarium and luxurious suite for Barbie doll to relax in. Sounds include 2 disco songs with lights activation, 1 cruise ship horn, and 1 water-and-dolphin play. Folds up for on-the-go and easy storage." Sounds like all the fun of a real cruise ship, right at your fingertips! Of course there's also this disclaimer: "Barbie doll not included." I think Pam can take care of that one, right Pam? -- Gerry

HOW ABOUT A TOUR OF DRACULA'S CASTLE?

Bela lugosi draculaCruiseCompete notes that Scenic Tours, which specializes in river cruising, offers some unique excursions, including Bucharest’s Bran Castle. "Guests journey by coach to the rumored home of Count Dracula, where they enjoy an 'active-paced' guided tour of the ancient castle before returning to Bucharest."

And this is cool: "Beginning in 2013 Scenic will also offers 'TailorMade' excursion option, which features a series of self-guided tour enhanced by GPS-activated directions and commentary. (Once aboard the ship, a free Scenic Tailor-made app can be downloaded to your Apple IPhone or IPad, or you can choose to take one of the line’s pre-loaded devices.)" I can just hear my tour unit talking to me: "No, no -- I distinctly said turn right here, left." -- Gerry

AUTUMN ON THE QUEEN MARY

The sun is blazing, summer is in full-swing in South Florida.

Yet, all around I am witnessing signs of Fall. Autumn. And, we have not even reached the end of August.

Here in South Florida all the stores are clamoring for attention and dollars with Back-to-School sales and Thanksgiving decorations. Thanksgiving?

What about Labor Day? We are just going to skip right over it?

No, but I decided to join in and bring a little bit of North Atlantic Fall atmosphere to this post.

Can not think of a better way to do so than with a few snaps crossing from New York to South Hampton.

Thank you, Queen Mary 2.

The temperatures and humidity are still raging outdoors, but these make me feel a lot cooler.

I'm still not buying Thanksgiving decorations until after Labor Day! -- Pam

The crossing on the QM2 was truly unforgettable. And I must say Ms. Cruising Squared made quite a fashion statement throughout the trip! -- Gerry

PUDSEY WOWS 'EM ON THE QUEEN MARY 2

Pudsey and Ashleigh (Credit: Cunard)
It's hard to resist an item that combines cruising and dogs. As you know, its verboten to take your furry friend on the ship with you -- with one exception: The Queen Mary 2. That's the only ship which provides a kennel on board where pets can travel with their owners.

The winners of from the TV show, Britain's Got Talent, Pudsey the dog and trainer Ashleigh Butler, got to show their stuff on the QM2's Transatlantic voyage after performances in the States. From Cunard's press release: "Pudsey and Ashleigh charmed the ship's 2,600 guests as Pudsey danced on his hind legs, jumped through hoops, and spun around as part of their popular Charleston dance routine. Ever the entertainer, Pudsey couldn't resist performing for the crowd on the quayside as they disembarked in Southampton on August 10."

“I've been on a cruise ship before but this is the first time I’ve been able to bring Pudsey along," said Ashleigh, "thanks to Queen Mary 2’s remarkable dog-walking deck. . .we received such a warm welcome. Pudsey loved the fresh sea air and all of the pampering and attention he received from Cunard’s wonderful passengers. I could tell he really enjoyed performing on board - he just loves the limelight!"

Not to be outdone, our own Cavalier King Charles, Reggie, has some pretty amazing talents herself. Check it out:
Reggie and her Pal (in the green scarf)
practicing their ventriloquist act:
"Woof! Woof!"
Talented canines come in many shapes. I wonder how the Cunard passengers would respond to this dynamic-duo?

CELEBRATING THE BRITISH OLYMPICS

Peter Shanks
Have you been following the Olympics? For me one of the greatest aspects of the Games, besides the amazing athleticism, is the enormous national pride on display for the world. And few nations can match the pride and patriotism of the British, who have done themselves proud as the host nation.

This is wonderfully expressed by Cunard Line president and managing director Peter Shanks in his blog post, "Our Wonderful British Olympics." He writes: "The whole experience at the Olympic park is awesome. We took the Jubilee line from London Waterloo to Stratford Station. Everybody on the tube was chatting to each other – that never happens in London – but on this occasion there was so much excitement that we were all going to see the Olympics in our own backyard."

Read all of his first person account here. And to all our friends across the pond -- well done! --Gerry

More and more, people are turning to the Internet for information. I think it is important to provide a place online for stakeholders to get information on our industry, directly from the source.”

Right now, CLIA is focused on further strengthening what is an already exceptional safety record, packaging and marketing the plethora of specialty and theme cruises our lines offer, training the next generation of travel agents, and helping deliver more meeting and incentive business to our cruise line partners.”

CS: What’s the most satisfying aspect about your job?
Ms. Duffy: “Cruising is one of the safest, most affordable and enjoyable vacation experiences available today. I am proud to represent an industry that provides such great value and experiences to consumers who want to see the world and spend time with their family and friends. PRINCESS SURVEYS HOW AMERICANS RELAX

Have anything planned for Aug. 15? How about just kicking back with your favorite leisure-time activity? The reason: Aug. 15 is National Relaxation Day. We don't know about you, but that's just what the doctor ordered around here.

To celebrate, Princess Cruises commissioned a report that pointed out the differences in how generations view relaxing. One example: Baby Boomers tend to use all the vacation time they have coming; Millennials on the other hand, not so much (for them it's a vacation when the boss is gone).

There was also this: "Looking ahead to the end of summer, Princess Cruises queried Americans on what they most need to escape from before fall. The No. 1 response was hot weather (50 percent), followed by high gas prices (38 percent) and political campaigns (36 percent)." Ask the same question a month or two from now and I bet "politics" jumps to number one!

Here's the complete release:

DECK CHAIR BROUHAHA CONTINUES

The brouhaha over deck chairs continues. On the heels on Pam's post about the crackdown on saving deck chairs comes a new report that Norwegian is the latest to weigh-in on the issue. It seems kind of sad that cruise lines have to enforce rules when common courtesy would suffice. -- Gerry

WHERE DO YOU DREAM ABOUT GOING?

WELCOME A NEW BLOG FROM C.L.I.A.

Christine Duffy
As cruise bloggers, you probably know Pam and I think blogging is a great venue for sharing information and connecting with others, both industry insiders and people who cruise. When we heard about a new blog just launched by Christine Duffy, CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association, we wanted to extend her a warm welcome! For those who might not know, CLIA is "the international cruise industry’s largest trade and travel agency association, comprised of 26 cruise lines, nearly 16,000 travel agents and agencies, and 120 executive partners." Headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, they do a terrific job of representing the cruise lines on many major issues affecting the industry.

According to Ms. Duffy, "My new blog will allow me – and others in the cruise industry, through their guest contributions – to share perspectives on the latest industry issues and trends." She added, "Also, via my Twitter feed, I will share current, relevant information on our industry and contribute to the dynamic conversations happening already."

We're hoping to catch up with Christine and post an interview soon. In the meantime, congrats on your new blog! -- Gerry and Pam

CARNIVAL BREEZE, SAVING DECK CHAIRS

Photo: Cruising Squared
Having a reserved seat on your own cruise ship balcony makes sailing the high-seas even more divine.

Not being able to find a lounge chair near a pool deck because  absentee passengers have saved most of them by tossing a towel, book or beach bag onto them for hours and hours?

Annoying?

Bad manners?

Your right as a passenger?

Arlene Satchell, Sun Sentinel writer and travel expert asks for opinions as Carnival Cruise Lines is about to test a new system for saving (or not being able to save) pool deck chairs.

I know my opinion.

What's yours?

If there's one thing Pam likes as much as cruising it's classic movies. So what could be better than combining the two? This week it was announced the 2013 Turner Classic Movies Classic Cruise will be setting sail Jan. 21 from Miami. New York City was once the premier cruise center of the United States.  Until recently anyone driving along the West Side Highway could easily see the dilapidated and rotting piers where once the great liners of days gone by would ingest and disgorge tens of thousands of vacation bound passengers.
Miami moved in to fill the gap for Caribbean cruising and trans-Atlantic voyages from the Big Apple existed only in fond memory.
Not any more.
The New York/New Jersey corridor has once again come into its own with regularly scheduled, year-round cruises from Bayonne and the West Side terminals.  While Celebrity Cruises has made Bayonne its port, Disney and others have brought their floating cities in to New York.

Passengers on Norwegian Epic rave about the series, "Legends in Concert," featuring tribute artists who perform as famous entertainers, like Elvis Presley and Lady Gaga. Norwegian has just announced the next round of tribute concerts, which begin Nov. 3 on Epic's return to Miami for sailings to the Eastern Caribbean. The lineup includes J Lucas, performing as Michael Jackson, Marva Scott, portraying Donna Summer, and Barrie Cunningham, who'll take the stage as Jimmy Buffett.

Performers will do six, 45-minute shows in the Epic Theater over three days during the seven-day cruise. Additionally, "a Legends 'Unplugged' show is performed on three additional nights in the Manhattan Room, the ship's New York-inspired supper club." The celebrity performers change every four months.  --Gerry

PIN SOME RELAXING IMAGES AND WIN A PRIZE

Are you a "pinner"? For those in the social know, that's a user of Pinterest. If so, Princess Cruises has launched its first Pinterest contest, asking users to create a board with images of what it means to "escape completely."

"The top five boards will win a Sanctuary Relaxation Kit, complete with a Lotus Spa plush robe, skin nourishing milk bath and an iPod with a $50 iTunes gift card. The contest runs from August 1-14, 2012 – leading up to National Relaxation Day on August 15."

I'm pretty sure the Cruising Squared board would have  a deck chair, an ocean view, a cocktail and a good book, or game of "Sorry."

Here are the entry details from Princess:

SPORTS LEGENDS COMPETE ON OASIS

Royal Caribbean is catching the Olympic spirit with a little competition of their own aboard Oasis of the Seas. The participants are legendary sports figures Michelle Kwan and Greg Louganis. You can even register to win a cruise by voting for your favorite on the line's Facebook page. (We can't believe one of the events is cupcake decorating. Talk about game on!!) Here are the details, and a video from Royal Caribbean:

"It's 'game on' this summer when world-class figure skating champion Michelle Kwan and world-champion diver Greg Louganis go head-to-head in the first-ever Royal Deck-athlon at sea onboard Royal Caribbean International's Oasis of the Seas. The skating and diving legends are facing-off in two commercial spots that will air on NBC-owned stations throughout the country. Viewers will be directed to visit the cruise line's Facebook page to see the legends compete in a series of 10 events onboard the world's most revolutionary cruise ship including: surfing the FlowRider; climbing the rock wall; skating in the ice rink; diving at the AquaTheatre; zip lining across the Boardwalk; table tennis, mini-golf and basketball in the Sports Zone; playing blackjack in Casino Royale; and cupcake decorating in the Cupcake Cupboard.

"Consumers can get in the game by voting for their favorite competitor at the cruise line's Facebook page. Fans can vote once a day until August 12 for the chance to win daily prizes as well as the ultimate grand prize - the opportunity to recreate their own Deck-athlon on a seven-night Caribbean cruise for two on Oasis of the Seas or Allure of the Seas."
