IS ANOTHER 'LOVE BOAT' COMING BACK TO TV?

Is TV ready for another "Love Boat"? That's a possibility, according to this recent article from the website Jaunted: "According to The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners Matt Williams and David McFadzean are working on a cruise ship comedy, called Port of Miami, for NBC. The show will be set aboard a Miami-based cruise liner and will follow a white bartender with little ambition 'who works with a variety of international employees, all of them aggressively seeking the American dream and incredulous that he is content to mix drinks, chase women and settle for less.' The network is calling the potential series 'Cheers on a cruise ship.' "

COULD HAVANA BE A NEW PORT OF CALL?

The news that the U.S. and Cuba are moving toward normalizing relations after half a century has many people buzzing, including the cruise industry. Quoting from the website TravelPulse, who asks "Could Cuba Be the Cruise Lines' Next Big Port of Call,": "If Cuba opens up to U.S. tourists, it would have an immediate and impressive impact on the cruise industry. For decades, cruise ships have sailed around the 780-mile-long island, which sits smack-dab between South Florida homeports and popular islands such as Jamaica and Grand Cayman. 'It needs some lipstick and love to bring things up to standard,' said Vicky Garcia, the Cuban-American COO of Cruise Planners. 'But it could be very exciting.'"

Very exciting, indeed. As they say in TV, "stay tuned."

CARNIVAL INVITES YOU TO WIN A CRUISE FOR LIFE

Vote for your favorite Carnival commercial
How would like to win a cruise every year for life? I thought so. Carnival Cruises is giving you that chance by simply voting for your favorite Carnival commercial, which will air during Super Bowl XLIX Sunday, Feb. 1, on NBC.

The commercials were created by BBDO Atlanta, who collaborated with Academy Award-winning cinematographer and Hollywood director Wally Pfister – best known for his work on Transcendence, Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy – to develop Carnival Corporation's first-ever Super Bowl commercial. The final commercial will be a 60-second spot selected from four full-scale production ads.

"The final Super Bowl TV commercial will be sourced from the company's recently launched 'World's Leading Cruise Lines Marketing Challenge'. Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, this interactive crowd-sourcing contest lets consumers 'join the company's marketing team' and vote for their favorite creative concept with a chance to win a grand prize of a yearly cruise for life."

The field has been narrowed to four semi-finalists. The final elimination round kicking off today will narrow the field to two finalists, one of which will be the featured TV commercial airing live during Super Bowl XLIX in February. You can vote once every 24 hours - so click on over and get started! -- Gerry

U.S. LOBSTERS IN JOLLY OLD ENGLAND?

Have you seen the story about American lobsters suddenly showing up in UK waters? Experts pretty much agree they aren't taking a 3,000-mile road trip. The prevailing theory is cruise passengers, feeling sorry for the stars of those "surf and turf" dinners, are asking the waiters to throw the live lobsters overboard before they arrive on dinner plates.

If true, the story points out it's a lost cause:

"If you’ve got the itch to become a lobster savior, it’s best you don’t bother," according to a rep from the fishing industry. “They won’t last much longer than if the passengers had eaten them for dinner.”

For those passengers, maybe best to ask for the vegetarian special. -- Gerry

INTRODUCING 'CLASH AND DASH'

My partner -- in this blog and in life -- is a creative dynamo. Like a whirling dervish, she writes novels, she paints, a fabulous decorator, a gourmet cook, an expert photographer  -- I could go on and on. Not content to share in one blog, she is known to have a half-dozen going at the same time. I get to participate in her latest, called CLASH AND DASH. It's a "he-said, she-said" kind of a thing, except I get to be the Left Side, and she is the Right Side (not politics mind you, but position in the picture).  I never knew clashing could be so much fun. Please take a few minutes and check it out. -- Left Side, er, Gerry

HAUNTED HOTELS AND SPOOKY IMAGES

The Stanley Hotel (TripAdvisor)
Today is Halloween, and TripAdvisor is out with their "10 Most Haunted Hotels" list. As you might expect, The Stanley Hotel in Colorado (inspiration for "The Shining") makes the list, but did you think a cruise ship would? That honor goes to the Queen Mary, now docked in Long Beach, CA. and used as a hotel, where "ghostly activity" has been reported.

Cruising Squared is in the "spirit" as well, judging from these artful photo mashups by Pam:

Vacations can be fun, entertaining and relaxing. They can also be an awful hassle if you are going to be visiting more than one destination.

Those opting for a one stop trip more often than not end up in a resort that provides virtually all they need from meals to entertainment. If they are lucky enough to be in an area were there are other things to see and do, all the better.

The truth of the matter, though, is that those who go to most any resort end up sitting around all day, swimming a bit and perhaps taking in the entertainment in the evening.

There are alternatives.

Cruising is, in fact, a resort that refuses to stay in one spot. And you have a choice that is pretty wide-ranging. There are the floating cities that look as though a piece of California or Florida has broken off and floated out to sea. And then there are smaller and more intimate ships where you can actually get to know the captain, the crew and, most important, other passengers.

CUNARD HISTORY: HAIL TO HIBERNIA!

This article, written by Michael Gallagher, public relations executive and historian
for Cunard Line, is part of an ongoing series of key moments in Cunard Line's history

By Michael Gallagher
Cunard Historian

Hibernia arrives in New York
On 29 December 1847, Cunard Line made its first call to New York when Hibernia arrived. The Herald newspaper's front page screamed “Hail to the Hibernia” and detailed how "the entire populace swarmed to its waterfront to cheer the coming of the first Cunarder to the harbour of New York.”

Citing the wonders Cunard had done to Boston in terms of commerce and population growth, The Herald claimed Cunard's first ship, Britannia, had "initiated a new era in human intercourse."

The newspaper went on: "The arrival of the Hibernia...is only the beginning of the revolution that is going on in ocean steam navigation, which will ultimately result in drawing all steamers to this port. Our merchants ought to welcome Captain Ryrie to New York. Why not give him a public dinner, Friday next?"

There is some element of danger in posting this list of "10 high fashion hotels" from TripAdvisor. Like keeping the post on the downlow so Pam doesn't get busy making us reservations! With designer names like Versace, Armani and Lagerfeld, I'm too timid to hit the "Check Prices" button. But I admit it's fun to imagine a stay at one of these. CUNARD HISTORY: THE BOSTON CUP

Note: We are pleased to continue the History of Cunard series with this latest installment from Cunard historian Michael Gallagher.

By Michael Gallagher
Cunard Historian

Former flagship QE2 (left) sails past new
flagship Queen Mary 2 (right) in Boston in 2004
On 1 May 2004, Cunard flagship status passed from Queen Elizabeth 2 to Queen Mary 2 and the company sought a physical symbol to represent flagship status. Enter the Boston Cup! In a moving ceremony, QE2's Captain Ian McNaught handed the Cup to Queen Mary 2's Commodore Ron Warwick, and later that day attending guests, including Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, transferred by boat to the new flagship for lunch. After lunch they gathered at the stern of Queen Mary 2 and enjoyed the traditional British hymns and anthems waiting for QE2 to sail past.

When she emerged from the mist, the music was dramatically replaced with “Isn't She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder. Nothing more appropriate could have been played and there was not a dry eye on those aft decks – even those of the Deputy Prime Minister. Later that night, with the Boston Cup on board, Queen Mary 2 sailed for the first time as Cunard flagship.

CRUISING IS BIG BUSINESS

We all know cruising is big business, but do you know how big? Check out these figures from Travel Weekly:

"The global cruise industry generates $117 billion in total economic contributions, supporting 891,009 full-time jobs with total wages of $38.47 billion, according to new data. This comes as demand for cruising across the globe has increased 77 percent, from 12 million to 21.3 million passengers in the last decade, the research by the Cruise Lines International Association shows. The report found that 55% of global passengers are sourced from North America (11.82 million), including 10.92 million from the US."

No wonder the cruise lines are scrambling to launch bigger and better ships. -- Gerry

The “Seawitch” was developed exclusively for Princess Cruises, in partnership with San Francisco's Strike Brewing Company, and is the first in the line’s new series of craft beers. It will be introduced aboard Regal Princess when the cruise ship debuts in Florida for a season of Caribbean cruises this November.

More details from Princess:

"The Seawitch West Coast IPA will retail for $6.25 and be available in bars and lounges throughout Regal Princess. It is expected to be available fleetwide by early 2015.

"The cruise line will roll out additional Seawitch craft beers in partnerships with regional breweries that specialize in local flavors and represent some of the cruise destinations Princess ships visit.

"Princess Cruises will officially kick off its 50th anniversary year with the naming ceremony of Regal Princess on Nov. 5 in Ft. Lauderdale. The company is honoring the role the The Love Boat played in its five-decades-long history by having the original Love Boat cast members serve as godparents for its newest cruise ship." -- Gerry

HOLLAND AMERICA NAMES LARGEST SHIP

Holland America's largest ship has a name. The 99,500-ton cruise ship, slated for delivery in February 2016, will be ms Koningsdam. More details from the press release:

"While the name pays homage to the company’s rich heritage and deep roots in the Netherlands, it also reflects a new era with a bold name that is an original in Holland America Line’s 141-year history. The 2,650-passenger ship is an evolution in design for the line — a new Pinnacle Class — and is being built at Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard.

"Since 1883 every Holland America passenger vessel has borne the “dam” suffix, and ms Koningsdam carries on that tradition. The word koning means “king” in Dutch, and the name celebrates the majestic new ship. The name also pays honor to His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, the first king of the Netherlands in over a century."

CRUISE LINES BIG FANS OF THE NFL

With NFL football back in full swing (Pam says "Go FINS!"), here's an interesting read on how the cruise lines are partnering with NFL teams in a variety of promotional efforts. I say anything that combines cruising and football is a real win-win. -- Gerry

CUNARD HISTORY: SOUTHAMPTON

This article, written by Michael Gallagher, public relations executive and historian for Cunard Line, is part of an ongoing series of key moments in Cunard Line's history

Cunard's “Big Three:” Mauretania, Berengaria and Aquitania
Southampton has been a port since at least Roman times. During the Middle Ages, it was particularly important for wool and wine trade, which finally dwindled away almost completely by the early 18th Century. After a brief period as a spa resort, the port sprang into new life with the coming of the railway; and by 1840 – the year Cunard service from Liverpool to Boston began – it was obvious Southampton’s future prosperity as a passenger shipping port was assured.

During the 19th Century, the docks at Southampton gradually expanded, and many shipping companies came to use the port regularly. Liverpool remained the Cunard port, although an occasional call at Southampton by a Cunarder was not unknown.

White Star Line had been using Southampton since 1907 and had an office there. Cunard made occasional calls before World War One; but after that Cunard found it politic to operate its express liner service from Southampton and, in 1919, an office was established at Maritime Chambers. Soon Cunard's “Big Three,” Mauretania, Aquitania and Berengaria, were running from Southampton to New York via Cherbourg, with the first Cunarder to use the port being Aquitania. However, Mauretania inaugurated the new service on 18 November 1919.

The increased prosperity made the Southern Railway Company, who then owned the docks, consider plans for greatly enlarging them, and by the late 1920s the New Docks was under construction. News of the proposed new superliner, Queen Mary, prompted Southern Railway to include a giant dry dock in its plans – one large enough to accommodate Queen Mary. The New Docks was largely finished during the early 1930s, and on 26 July 1933, the dry dock was officially opened by King George V, whose name it bears.

The decision in 1965 to make Southampton the Head Office of Cunard meant that the premises at Maritime Chambers, used since 1919, were no longer adequate, so South Western House became the new home of Cunard. The former hotel building had been converted to provide office accommodation for the company. About 120 staff members and their families moved from Liverpool to Southampton, the existing staff of some 200 persons was retained and about 200 extra personnel were engaged, many locally.

On 4 July 1966 – 166 years to the day Britannia departed on the voyage that changed ocean travel forever – Cunard Managing Director Philip Bates with his fellow Directors watched the Cunard flag unfurl above South Western House.

When QE2 entered service in 1969, she was the first Cunard passenger ship to have Southampton on her stern.

Cunard remained at South Western House until 1996 before relocating to Mountbatten House at Grosvenor Square ,and then to Harbour Parade in 2009.

SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS, GUARANTEED

This month we have been awed by the spectacle of the giant full moons hanging over the Atlantic. But how cool would it be to observe another one of Nature's spectacular shows -- the Northern lights -- from a cruise ship? One cruise line, Hurtigruten, is promising you'll see the lights on one of their Norway voyages or you'll get a second voyage free. They should know, since they have been providing coastal tours for 120 years. Check it out in this video:

TRIPADVISOR'S '22 AMAZING PLACES'

Iguazu Falls (Credit: TripAdvisor)
Why does TripAdvisor continue to taunt me? Their latest "poke in the eye" is titled "22 amazing places you must visit." Among them, probably the number one place on my bucket list: Iguazu Falls in South America, where the Amazon feeds almost 300 waterfalls. Some day ... Until then, we'll recall the splendor of another amazing place we did visit -- Niagara Falls. Maybe not Iguazu, but not too shabby, either! -- Gerry

'QUANTUM' TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASED

When your company's mission statement is "WOW," the pressure is always on to deliver, right? This week in Papenburg, Germany, Royal Caribbean's CEO and chairman, Richard Fain, did just that at an event showcasing the technology in their newest ship, Quantum of the Seas.

Speaking to travel agents, media representatives and staffers at the shipyard where Quantum is being constructed, Fain revealed new details about what will be the most technologically advanced cruise experience at sea, including robot bartenders, virtual balconies, automated check-in and a room reminiscent of the Star Trek holodeck.

As dazzling as all the gadgetry is, the one feature most passengers will drool over is having a DSL-comparable connection on the ocean, made possible by Royal's partnership with O3b, whose satellites are positioned to deliver high bandwidth service on a constant basis. Read our prior interview will Bill Martin to learn more about how this works.

No one will object to faster boarding, either, made possible by a new array of "Smart" apps and systems. Want to skip the line for getting your boarding picture made? No problem -- snap a "selfie" and get scanned right in.

Christmas came early for the staffers in attendance. Fain announced Royal is giving every one of its 40,000 employees a Windows tablet. That's putting your technology where your mouth is.

And did we say "robot bartenders"? Who else would man the Bionic Bar, where the talented mechanical arms squeeze lemons, shake martinis and mix ingredients. Robotic arms also power the "holodeck"-like experience in Two70, where massive screens can mimic everything from a primeval forest to a giant aquarium. Here is an earlier post on that feature.

Entertainment options abound, including a skydiving simulator, the much-touted "North Star" observation pod and even that throwback classic, bumper cars. Read the complete press release here.

Will it all work as advertised? Fain and Royal are betting it will. They, and the rest of us, won't have long to wait. Quantum makes it debut in a few short months. -- Gerry

THE LEGACY OF THE PRETTY SISTERS

Credit: Cunard
The Pretty Sisters and Their Lasting Legacy

By Michael Gallagher
Cunard Historian

This article, written by Michael Gallagher, public relations executive and historian for Cunard Line, is part of an ongoing series of key moments in Cunard Line's history. Read our interview with Michael here.
As the 20th Century dawned, Cunard Line began to draw up initial plans for what would become the first-ever “superliners,” Lusitania and Mauretania, which would enter service in 1907. But how would the future superliners, the largest and fastest ships in the world, be powered?

There were two options for Cunard to consider: the standard quadruple-expansion system or the new-fangled Parsons steam turbine system. Engineer Charles Parsons had caused controversy at the 1897 Spithead Naval Review by demonstrating his revolutionary turbine-powered Turbinia.

SCHWARTZ CRAFT BEER: BEHIND THE SCENES

We've had the pleasure of meeting famed Miami chef and restaurateur Michael Schwartz and learning first-hand about his farm-to-ship approach as part of his association with Royal Caribbean. Already a winning combination, Schwartz and Royal have expanded the relationship for its newest ship, Quantum of the Seas. As Quantum Experience Advisor for Culinary, Schwartz will be showcasing his Michael's Genuine Home Brew craft beer and other taste delights from his farm fresh playbook. Here is a new video that goes into more detail. Bon appetit! -- Gerry

CONCERTS WILL MARK CUNARD'S 175TH YEAR

Britannia and the Queen Mary 2 (Cunard)
Passengers aboard the Queen Mary 2's July 175th Anniversary Crossing are in for a special treat. (175 years -- that's amazing for any business, yet alone the cruise business!) On July 4, 2015, that voyage will be celebrated with special concerts at the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool, attended by all Queen Mary 2 passengers. The “Triumph of a Great Tradition” concerts will celebrate Cunard's long heritage.

"Queen Mary 2 will be berthed in Liverpool on the exact day 175 years earlier that Cunard’s first ship, Britannia, left Liverpool. Later that day Queen Mary 2 will follow in Britannia’s wake and recreate that epic first voyage, calling at Halifax and Boston (just as Britannia did) before arriving in New York." The departure from Liverpool will be marked by fireworks and the voyage will feature special events, including gala dinners and a 175 Ball in the Queens Room.
