CRUISING AND THE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

Browsing the shops of St. Thomas
This is a topic I take quite seriously, both on land and on sea.

Frequently, I am asked about shopping while on-board or in the various ports-of-call.

My advice?

Approach it as though you are at home.

Know what you what to purchase while away from home. In other words, are you considering expensive items such as jewelry or simply souvenirs?

If it is simply trinkets, no worries. Magnets, shot glasses, keychains are all overpriced, but affordable.

If you are more in the market for big-ticket items, know the at-home or on-line prices before you leave port.

Take advantage of the shopping lectures while on-board and don't be afriad to ask questions of the ships staff. Peruse the shopping brochures they offer and start comparing prices.

Some places are open to barter and some not. Know this before going in.

In St. Thomas, for example, you have the traditional and ship-recommended shops and directly across the street you have tented vendors offering everything you would imagine.

The prices are already reasonable and they will barter, but not that much.

Tell us do you throw caution to the wind while on a cruise and go shop until you drop?

What have you experienced in your favorite port or ship!
